Residents of Vihiga and Kisumu have expressed outrage over the violent assault of Senator Godfrey Osotsi at a popular cafe in Kisumu town. CCTV footage circulated online shows the senator being struck, falling to the ground, and repeatedly beaten by several attackers before being dragged aside, prompting shock across communities.

People in Vihiga, Osotsi’s home county, were quick to condemn the incident. Many described the attack as shocking and unacceptable, emphasizing that public officials should not fear for their safety while performing everyday activities. “The young men are angry about what happened in Kisumu, and we aren’t going to like it in the future as well. We want justice for our son Osotsi,” said a local resident. Another woman questioned how a sitting senator could be assaulted in broad daylight while bystanders watched, expressing disbelief and anger.
Following the attack, Osotsi was rushed to Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu for initial treatment before being airlifted to Karen Hospital in Nairobi. Community members criticized the slow government response, noting that security and oversight appear inadequate. “Senator came to this market at Munungo and did a good job. He used to walk with the late Raila Odinga, yet no one from the government has come to check on the senator,” said a resident, highlighting frustration over the lack of protective measures.
Residents also condemned the alleged involvement of hired assailants, suggesting that political rivalries are spilling over into public spaces and endangering both leaders and civilians. Many called on authorities to act swiftly, apprehend the attackers, and implement better security protocols for public officials. Social media reactions from citizens reinforced these demands, with calls for accountability and justice trending across platforms.
The incident has ignited broader discussions on political violence and safety in Kenya. Locals insist that public spaces must remain safe for everyone and that public officials should be able to carry out their duties without fear. The assault on Senator Osotsi serves as a stark reminder that protecting leaders is not only a matter of protocol but a community concern.
