Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has raised serious concerns over Kenyans’ medical data. He questioned its security and ethical use under the Kenya–United States Health Cooperation Framework worth Ksh. 208 billion. In a Wednesday interview with KTN News, he also criticised the lack of public participation.

“We cannot compromise the privacy of our medical data. Every Kenyan has a right to confidentiality. Such records should not be shared for foreign research without clear safeguards,” Gachagua said. He added, “If the Social Health Authority is not working, do you really want to believe the lies being peddled by the same government?”
The five-year deal, signed on December 4 in Washington, aims to support Kenya’s priority health programs and strengthen national health systems. The US will channel over Ksh. 200 billion directly through Kenyan government systems to fund the initiatives.
Gachagua backed Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah’s petition to suspend the framework. He said it threatens Kenyans’ constitutionally protected right to health. Omtatah added that citizens were denied a voice, making the process “arbitrary and exclusionary.”
President William Ruto defended the deal. He said it is legally sound, safeguards Kenyan interests, and will not exploit citizens. “Our goal is crystal clear. Our focus is laser-sharp. Our resolve and determination are that of steel to ensure we prioritise the people of Kenya and pursue what is good for the nation,” Ruto said.
Gachagua also outlined his health reforms if elected president. He promised to modernize NHIF, reinstate the Linda Mama program, partner with faith-based health providers, ensure fair pay for doctors, and expand universal health coverage.
“If Kenyans allow me to serve as President, I will ensure NHIF meets contemporary needs. I will reinstate Linda Mama, work closely with faith-based organisations and ensure doctors are properly paid. Hospitals must be well equipped,” he said.
