The Russian and French embassies in Kenya sparked a surprising clash on X after Russia accused France of using mercenaries to interfere in African countries. The allegations targeted Mali, Burkina Faso, and the Central African Republic. Moscow claimed Paris seeks “political revenge” under President Emmanuel Macron.

The Russian Embassy posted: “Russian Foreign Intelligence Service: #French administration under E.Macron is seeking a ‘political revanche’ in #Africa by foiling coup attempts in #BurkinaFaso, destabilizing #Mali & #CAR, and forging plans to undermine the new leadership in #Madagascar.” They attached official links suggesting France was behind the failed January 3 coup in Burkina Faso. Russia said the goal was to bring pro-French forces to power and weaken pan-African movements.

Russia also accused France of destabilizing Madagascar, where riots recently led to the fall of former leader Andry Nirina Rajoelina. According to Moscow, Paris is exploring ways to replace the current government with a loyal regime. Russian claims included links to local terrorist groups and Ukraine allegedly aiding French interests in the Sahara-Sahel region.

France responded in a lighter tone. The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs tweeted a meme of President Macron with the caption: “Hizi ni story za…,” implying the claims were exaggerated. The French account added: “Always nice to feature so prominently in Russia’s sales pitch in Africa. Waiting on the customer reviews. Syria, Venezuela, Iran — any feedback?”

Kenyans quickly joined the debate. Jeff Ntsoane wrote that France’s colonial legacy still harms Africa. Karen Kaviti questioned whether the embassy account was official. Political analyst Sitati Wasilwa noted that while France has a colonial past, Russian mercenaries have not clearly improved Sahel security. Olivier Vicenzier added that Africa should not be treated as a market; real concern comes from improving stability, sovereignty, and citizens’ lives.

The online spat shows how diplomacy now plays out on social media. Embassy statements, memes, and viral posts shape narratives. Yet the real impact remains on the ground. Africans continue to be key stakeholders in their continent’s future.
