Ruth Odinga Rebukes ODM Leaders For Using “Orphan” Tag After Raila’s Death

Kisumu woman representative Ruth Odinga has criticized ODM leaders calling themselves “orphans” after the death of party founder Raila Odinga. Speaking on Radio Nam Lolwe on Wednesday, November 12, she said such claims are counterproductive. Ruth urged leaders to stay assertive and focus on leadership, not sympathy.

Her remarks follow comments by Alego-Usonga MP Sam Atandi, Nyando’s Jared Okello and Uriri’s Mark Nyamita. They argued that Raila’s passing left them politically exposed. The MPs suggested taking a humble approach with President William Ruto to avoid unfamiliar political challenges.

Ruth, a senior ODM figure and Raila’s sister, disagreed with the “orphan” narrative. She said leaders have the right to their opinions but using the label to seek sympathy weakens the community. “Every leader is entitled to their opinion. ODM is a party founded on democratic ideals, and members must speak their minds. But calling themselves orphans is misplaced and counterproductive,” she said.

She highlighted the Luo community’s history of strength. Legendary figures like Gor Mahia and Lwanda Magere showed resilience and courage. “I have never seen a Luo who proudly calls himself an orphan and expects sympathy. Even during Gor Mahia and Lwanda Magere, we were fighters. A Luo is strong and steadfast,” Ruth stated.

The lawmaker warned that the “orphan” label projects weakness instead of leadership. She reminded ODM members that the community has lost leaders before, and others always rose to take their place. “When a leader goes down, we expect another to rise, not retreat to an orphan’s corner,” she added.

Ruth’s comments emphasize the need for unity and proactive leadership. She urged ODM members to honor Raila’s legacy by showing strength and guiding the party forward confidently.
