Ruto Announces Shauri Moyo Housing Estate Will Be Renamed After Late MP Johana Ng’eno

President William Ruto has ordered that a large housing estate in Nairobi be renamed in honour of the late Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ng’eno. The President said the current Shauri Moyo Housing Estate will now carry the name of the legislator who died in a helicopter crash last week.

Ruto made the announcement on Friday during the burial ceremony for Ng’eno and four other victims. The funeral took place at Emurua Dikirr Primary School, where family members, residents and political leaders gathered to pay their final respects.

According to the President, the proposal to rename the estate came from members of the National Assembly’s committee dealing with housing and urban development. Ng’eno had served as the chairperson of the committee and was closely involved in pushing forward the government’s housing plans.

Ruto praised the late lawmaker for standing firm behind the affordable housing programme even when the project faced heavy criticism and legal battles. The President said the initiative had attracted protests and court challenges but remained a key development agenda for his administration.

“I’m directing the Ministry of Housing to rename Shauri Moyo Housing Estate to Johana Ng’eno Housing Estate in the city of Nairobi…kwa heshima ya kazi ya ujenzi wa manyumba Mheshimiwa Ng’eno alitoa uongozi wake kama Chairman,” Ruto said.

He noted that the housing programme had been difficult to implement because of opposition from different groups. However, he said Ng’eno remained committed to the project and supported it when others advised the government to abandon it.

“Kuna watu wengi waliniambia wachana na mambo ya housing levy, one of them was not Ng’eno,” the President added.

Ruto said the housing programme is already bringing development projects to different parts of the country. He pointed to the construction of a modern market in Emurua Dikirr as one of the projects linked to the initiative.

During the same event, the President also promised government support for the establishment of a university campus in the area. He asked local leaders to identify land for a Maasai Mara University campus and directed Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga to help facilitate funding for the project.
