President William Ruto has appealed for the release of Kenyans reportedly detained in Ukraine. The concern follows reports that some young Kenyans were lured or illegally recruited to fight in the Russia – Ukraine war. Ruto raised the matter directly in a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Ruto said some Kenyans may have been misled with false promises. He condemned recruitment networks that target job seekers and vulnerable youth. “I have requested President Zelensky to facilitate the release of any Kenyan in Ukrainian custody. I am grateful to His Excellency for acceding to my appeal,” he stated.
Both leaders agreed to increase awareness campaigns. They want to stop illegal recruitment channels and protect young people from exploitation. Ruto said the government will intensify public warnings on such schemes.
The two presidents also discussed broader relations. Ruto praised Ukraine for organizing the upcoming Ukraine Food Summit. He said Kenya remains committed to strengthening cooperation in trade, humanitarian support and security.
In a statement from Kyiv, Zelensky confirmed the call. He said he updated Ruto on Russia’s continued attacks on Ukrainian civilians and infrastructure. Zelensky thanked Kenya for its support and solidarity. “We touched upon the issue of Russia’s recruitment of foreign citizens into its criminal war. We are aware of the fraudulent methods being used and will work closely with Kenya to put an end to them,” he said.
The leaders also discussed ongoing joint projects. They agreed to direct their government teams to enhance coordination. Zelensky added that Ukraine will soon submit a resolution to the United Nations on Russia’s alleged abduction of Ukrainian children. He expressed gratitude for Kenya’s backing on the issue.
