Ruto Steps Into Nairobi Hospital Crisis, Promises Action Against ‘Fraudsters’ Amid Ownership Row

President William Ruto has moved to address the ongoing turmoil at Nairobi Hospital, saying he will not allow the institution to fall into the wrong hands. He revealed that senior doctors reached out to him, asking for help to stop what they described as an attempted takeover driven by questionable interests.

Ruto said the hospital remains a critical healthcare pillar and must be protected. “There is no way I am going to allow Nairobi Hospital to be taken hostage by fraudsters,” he stated. He emphasized that his role is to safeguard the institution, not control it, dismissing claims that he is pursuing ownership.

The President confirmed that investigations are already underway. Individuals linked to the hospital’s leadership have been arrested and charged over alleged financial misconduct, including conflict of interest and failure to meet legal reporting requirements. “All those involved will be taken to court,” Ruto added, signaling a tough stance on accountability.

The crisis has exposed deep divisions within the hospital. Doctors and board members have clashed over governance, finances, and transparency. Allegations of hidden records and attempts to destroy evidence have further raised alarm about how the institution has been managed.

Opposition leaders have accused the government of trying to influence the hospital’s leadership. However, Ruto dismissed the claims, saying his involvement was prompted solely by doctors seeking intervention. He also defended his position as patron of the Kenya Hospital Association, which oversees the hospital.

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has clarified that the hospital is owned by its members and cannot be taken over. This structure, he noted, ensures it remains independent despite the ongoing disputes.

As investigations continue, attention now turns to whether the hospital can restore stability. For many Kenyans, the priority is clear. The institution must survive the crisis and continue delivering care without disruption.
