Seven-Day Ultimatum: TikToker Arrested After Daring Challenge to President Ruto

Detectives have arrested Peter Maingi Kimani, widely known online as Menelik Kimani, following a viral TikTok video in which he openly challenged President William Ruto. The arrest took place in Gatundu South, where officers tracked him to a hideout in the Gachage area of Kiganjo. Authorities say the three-minute clip triggered immediate security concerns.

In the video, Kimani directly addressed the Head of State. He demanded a physical confrontation and declared that the winner would take over the presidency. He issued a seven-day ultimatum. “I give you seven days to make a wise decision because it will be a matter of life and death, and only the strong will survive,” he said. He went further, adding, “If you think you will lose, I give you a chance to call me and hand over power to me in a peaceful manner.”

The remarks quickly spread online. The bold tone drew both criticism and alarm. In another part of the clip, he warned, “If you don’t do any of these, I will visit the State House, and your fate will be mine to decide.” Investigators say the statements amounted to a direct threat against the President.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations moved swiftly. Officers located him within hours and placed him in custody. He is now being processed ahead of his court appearance. Police have not disclosed the exact charges but indicated they relate to threats and misuse of digital platforms.

In a statement, the DCI defended the arrest. The agency acknowledged constitutional protections but stressed limits. “The DCI reminds the public that while freedom of expression is guaranteed in the Constitution, its enjoyment should not be used as a tool to promote or justify the violation of the rights of others,” the statement read. It added that no effort will be spared in addressing irresponsible use of social media, especially where peace and security are at risk.

The incident has reignited debate over online speech and accountability. As social media influence grows, authorities appear determined to draw a clear line between expression and incitement.
