“Stop Exporting Your Bad Manners!” – Church Condemns Senator Cherargei Over Threats to Activists

The Church and Clergy Association of Kenya has strongly condemned Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei. He made threatening remarks to activists during a church service in Kapsabet on November 9, 2025. The association called the comments “unfortunate and unfitting” for a public leader.

During the service, Cherargei accused Kenyan activists of undermining regional peace through “bad manners.” He urged neighbouring presidents to act against them. “I want to warn our activists who are busybodies… Stop exporting your bad manners to other countries. Stop it! I want to ask President Museveni and President Samia Suluhu Hassan, if you find any busybody activists who want to destabilise the peace and tranquillity of your countries, finya hawa uwarudishe nyumbani tuwamalizie (deal with them, then deport them to Kenya so that we can finish them),” he said.

The association’s national chairman, Bishop Hudson Ndeda, said the statements promoted physical violence. He added that activists play a vital role in Kenya’s democracy. Bishop Ndeda said it was shocking to see a senator speak such words from a church pulpit.

He also criticised Cherargei for defending his comments as cautionary. The senator refused to apologise to Kenyans. “It was both shocking and disturbing to see the senator defend words that could incite violence instead of acknowledging their seriousness,” Bishop Ndeda said.

The Church said Cherargei violated Chapter Six of the Constitution, which governs leadership and integrity. It urged the Inspector General of Police to investigate the statements. It also called on the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) to summon him.

The clergy warned that leaders must act responsibly. They said threats, especially in religious spaces, could destabilise society. The comments have sparked debate on leadership, accountability, and the safety of activists in Kenya.

The Church’s strong stance highlights the need for ethical leadership. It also stresses respect for the constitution, restraint and promoting peace in the country.
