Sudan on the Brink: UN Warns Food Aid Will Run Out Within Weeks as World’s Worst Hunger Crisis Deepens Further

Sudan is facing a severe humanitarian crisis. The United Nations warns that food aid could run out within weeks. Without immediate funding, millions of people could be left without food.

The country has suffered nearly three years of brutal fighting. The army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continue to clash. Tens of thousands have died. More than 11 million people have been displaced. Markets, farms, and supply routes have collapsed. Hunger is spreading fast.

The UN says over 21 million people face acute food insecurity. That is nearly half the population. Two-thirds need urgent humanitarian help. Children are suffering the most. UNICEF warns millions are on the edge of survival.

The World Food Programme (WFP) says its supplies are nearly gone. Ross Smith, WFP Director of Emergency Preparedness and Response, said stocks will run out by the end of March. Without immediate donor support, millions will be left without aid. Food rations have already been cut to the bare minimum for survival.

Famine has been confirmed in some areas. El-Fasher in North Darfur has been hardest hit. Kadugli in Kordofan is also facing famine. Nearby towns like Dilling are believed to be in famine-like conditions, but insecurity has blocked formal assessments. The UN warns that 20 more regions are at high risk.

Aid deliveries are limited. Some supplies have reached El-Fasher, the first since the city was besieged in May 2024. However, insecurity continues to block most humanitarian efforts.

Peace talks have stalled. The US and regional mediators—including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE have failed to secure a ceasefire. High-level meetings in Cairo produced no new proposals. Both sides continue fighting over territory.

Without urgent funding and a truce, Sudan’s hunger crisis will worsen. Millions of lives remain at risk. The UN warns that time is running out. Immediate action is needed to prevent further catastrophe.
