Support for Broad-Based Government Doubles in Six Months – TIFA Survey

Support for Kenya’s broad-based government has doubled in six months. It rose from 22% in May to 44% in November, according to a TIFA Research survey. The findings show that more Kenyans are warming to the coalition between President William Ruto and associates of the late Raila Odinga.

Opposition to the arrangement has also fallen. It dropped from 64% in August to 48% in November. This is the lowest level recorded across TIFA’s three surveys. Analysts say resistance peaked in August due to violent protests in June and July. Now, public opinion is softening as the coalition matures.

The broad-based government began last year after President Ruto backed Raila Odinga’s bid to lead the African Union Commission. After Odinga’s defeat in February, Ruto appointed senior ODM leaders to Cabinet posts. Others were named Permanent Secretaries, ambassadors, or given parastatal board roles. The partnership was strengthened with multiple presidential visits to Nyanza, commissioning development projects and meeting communities.

The survey was conducted weeks before Raila Odinga passed away on October 15 in India. His death has intensified disputes within ODM and the Odinga family. Concerns now focus on the 2027 general election. Despite this, the survey shows growing public acceptance of the broad-based government. Almost half of Kenyans still oppose it, but many are evaluating it based on results, not party lines.

Overall, the survey reflects a changing political landscape. The coalition is gradually gaining support. Citizens are increasingly looking at performance and development achievements. The broad-based government, once controversial, is now seen by many as a tool for stability and progress.
