Tanzania Marked 64th Independence Day Amid Calm, Anti-Government Protests Fail to Materialize

Tanzania celebrated its 64th Independence Day on Tuesday in calm and order. Opposition activists had called for mass protests. They labeled them the “mother of all demonstrations.” The aim was to pressure President Samia Suluhu Hassan for a new constitution.

Despite online campaigns, major cities including Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, Mwanza, and Zanzibar remained peaceful. Only small gatherings appeared in Arusha and a few other areas. This was a sharp contrast to October 29, when protests drew large crowds and some clashes with police.

Authorities credited citizens for maintaining peace. Minister of Home Affairs George Simbachawene praised Tanzanians for listening to the government. “Today the people of Tanzania have shown wisdom and love for their country by choosing peace over chaos,” he said in Dar es Salaam. “I thank my fellow citizens for refusing to be misled.”

Ruling party officials said the low turnout showed public support for President Samia’s leadership. Opposition critics argued fear played a role. Some activists had been arrested in the weeks before December 9. Internet slowdowns were reported in parts of the country. However, there were no mass detentions or widespread connectivity problems on the day itself.

Observers said the muted protests reflect challenges for opposition groups. Social media campaigns alone could not drive street action. Analysts suggest citizens may trust the government or fear repercussions for joining demonstrations.

Independence Day usually brings parades and celebrations across the country. Tuesday’s calm allowed people to participate in festivities and reflect on Tanzania’s progress since 1961. The peaceful day shows a balance between civic expression and national stability.

The celebrations ended without incidents. It was one of the quietest Independence Days in recent years. Citizens largely embraced the day with pride and peace.
