Tanzanians Sue President Samia Suluhu at the ICC, Accusing Her Government of Orchestrating Election-Period Atrocities

Hundreds of Tanzanians have taken their case to the International Criminal Court (ICC). They accuse President Samia Suluhu Hassan and security forces of violent crackdowns during the October 2025 elections. The victims say the attacks were organised and targeted civilians. They want the ICC to open a formal investigation. This move has drawn global attention to Tanzania’s political situation.

The petition was filed by the Madrid Bar Association on behalf of protesters, journalists, activists, and indigenous communities. It details killings, torture, sexual violence, enforced disappearances, and the forced displacement of Maasai communities.

The victims argue that the crimes were widespread and systematic. They say abuses began long before the elections. According to the petition, the acts violate Article 7 of the Rome Statute on crimes against humanity. It also claims senior leaders, including President Suluhu, knew about the attacks.

Lawyer Juan Carlos Gutierrez submitted the 82-page document to The Hague. He said domestic channels failed the victims. He described killings, disappearances, and torture. He noted that internet shutdowns made it easier for security forces to operate without scrutiny. The Cybercrimes Act was allegedly used to silence dissent online.

Gutierrez urged the ICC to act fast. He warned that delays risk destroying evidence and endangering witnesses. He stressed that President Suluhu, as commander-in-chief, bears full responsibility.

The petition calls for an urgent preliminary examination. Victims said justice is long overdue. They want accountability and recognition of the suffering they endured. They argue the ICC is their last hope. Every day without action allows impunity to continue.

The world now watches as the ICC decides whether to open an investigation against Tanzania’s top leadership.
