Afrobeats star Tems has explained why she has avoided performing in Uganda for the past five years. She spoke to her Ugandan fans during an online session. The singer said her decision stems from a traumatic 2020 incident.

On December 13, 2020, Tems and fellow Nigerian artist Omah Lay were arrested after performing in Kampala. Authorities said the concert broke COVID-19 rules. They accused the artists of “negligently doing acts likely to spread an infectious disease.” Both Tems and Omah Lay said the organizers had all necessary permits and approvals.
Tems and her team were picked up from their hotel. They spent two nights in Kigo Prison before the charges were dropped on December 15, 2020. She described the experience as frightening. She said she broke down when handed a prison uniform. She struggled to understand how a fully approved show became a criminal case.
The incident still affects her feelings about Uganda. Promoters have repeatedly invited her to perform. But she remains cautious. She said her decision comes from trauma, not resentment. She needs reassurance before returning.
For Tems, the arrest was more than a legal misunderstanding. It shook her sense of safety as an international performer. It left a lasting emotional mark. Despite this, she thanked her Ugandan fans. She said her avoidance is temporary. She may return once she feels safe.
The 2020 ordeal remains a defining moment in her career. It shaped her personal and professional choices. Tems’ story shows how past experiences guide artists’ decisions. It highlights the challenges of performing internationally and the importance of safety.
