“The Future Is Babu”: ODM Youth Endorse Embakasi East MP to Carry Raila’s Legacy

A loud wave of youthful voices within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is pushing for change and they believe Embakasi East MP Babu Owino is the man to lead it. The call comes days after the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, a towering figure in Kenyan politics and the long-serving ODM leader.

Speaking passionately on Friday, October 24, the youth declared Babu Owino as the best candidate to take the party forward. They praised his bold leadership style, energy and deep connection with young people across the country. “As youth across the nation, we have only one leader who has always stood with us –  Honourable Babu Owino,” one member said. Another added, “Those demanding transformation and good governance know Babu is the right person to lead ODM into the future.”

Their endorsement came shortly after party delegates suggested Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga, Raila’s elder brother, to take over the leadership mantle. But the youth believe the party needs fresh ideas, youthful leadership and a voice that resonates with a new generation of voters.

They described Babu as a symbol of continuity, a leader capable of protecting Raila’s legacy while ushering in modern politics. “When you talk of Pan-Africanism, democracy or devolution, you can’t leave out Raila,” one youth said, calling him a hero who fought for fairness and national unity. The youth said Babu mirrors that same fighting spirit.

According to them, Babu’s boldness, consistency and commitment to justice make him a natural successor. They believe he can reconnect ODM with young Kenyans who feel forgotten by traditional politics. “Babu listens to us. He fights for us. He is one of us,” said another youth representative.

While Babu Owino has not officially responded to the endorsement, his influence within ODM continues to grow. The youth’s demand signals a possible generational shift – one that could redefine the future of Kenya’s strongest opposition party.

As ODM looks to rebuild after Raila’s death, one message echoes clearly from the ground: the youth want a new voice and they believe that voice belongs to Babu Owino.
