“The People Are His True Opponents,” Gachagua Warns Ruto Ahead of 2027 Showdown

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua delivered a sharp warning to President William Ruto after his claim of having no strong rival in the 2027 elections. Ruto had said, shortly after former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s burial, that Raila was his only real competitor. He also dismissed the emerging opposition coalition as unclear and weak.

Speaking at a joint opposition press conference on Monday, November 3, at Nairobi’s SKM Command Plaza, Gachagua redefined the political fight. He said Ruto’s real challenge comes not from politicians but from Kenyans. “I have heard William Ruto bragging that with Raila gone, he has no opponent. We are not his opponents. The people of Kenya are his opponents,” Gachagua stated. He warned that Ruto should not mistake political calm for public acceptance. Citizens are ready to assert their voice.

Gachagua addressed claims that opposition leaders are sidelined. He said their work mirrors the people’s demands. They aim to restore integrity, justice and accountability in governance. He added that Ruto seems to celebrate Raila’s absence but should focus on the millions seeking change.

On strategy, Gachagua revealed that the opposition coalition is uniting behind a single presidential candidate. He said recent by-elections are rehearsals to test systems and rally support. Their key goals include ending corruption, stopping extrajudicial killings, improving public resource management and empowering citizens economically.

Gachagua stressed that the opposition remains focused, united and determined. He promised that no challenge will stop them from consolidating support. The coalition is working to present a credible alternative to the current leadership.

As the 2027 race approaches, Gachagua made it clear: power lies with the people, not individual politicians. He urged Kenyans to remain engaged and vigilant. The opposition will continue its efforts to channel citizens’ demands into meaningful political change.
