Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has hinted at his health struggles while eulogising his close friend Frank Ireri, who died of cancer. Speaking at Ireri’s funeral on October 31, Uhuru spoke emotionally about the bond they shared and the challenges they both faced.

He revealed that Ireri had been a strong source of comfort during difficult times. Though he never confirmed any illness, Uhuru’s words suggested he had been quietly fighting his own battle.
“I don’t know whether I should say this, but these are the realities of life,” he said softly. “For most of last year and this year, he encouraged us through the challenges we were facing. He guided us and told us how to handle them.”
Uhuru praised Ireri’s strength and wisdom, saying he would miss his support deeply. His words offered a rare glimpse into his personal struggles, which had long been the subject of speculation.
“The reason Frank is lying here is because it is his time,” Uhuru continued. “Those of us facing similar challenges will keep fighting. But when it is God’s time, we shall join him and be thankful for the life we lived.”
Rumours about Uhuru’s health began earlier this year. His few public appearances and bald head sparked talk that he was undergoing chemotherapy. Some also noted that he seemed short of breath while speaking.
Close allies dismissed these reports. Jubilee official Pauline Njoroge once called them “fictional and ill-intentioned.”
Recently, Uhuru has appeared stronger. He has led Jubilee Party meetings and addressed supporters with renewed energy. His speech at Ireri’s funeral, however, revealed a vulnerable side – one that accepts life’s trials with grace and gratitude.
Through his tribute, Uhuru reminded Kenyans that even leaders face silent battles. Yet his calm words showed courage, faith and hope amid uncertainty – a quiet message of strength from a man who continues to endure.
