Thika Superhighway Clean-Up Intensifies as KeNHA Delivers Demolition Notices by Hand

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has intensified efforts to remove illegal structures along the Thika Superhighway. The agency is now delivering demolition notices directly to traders operating on road reserves.

Officials have been visiting areas such as Delview, Kihunguro, and Allsops. These traders had earlier received notices instructing them to vacate the land. KeNHA says the deadline has now passed, and enforcement will follow where necessary.

The authority explains that the face-to-face delivery of notices is meant to prevent misunderstandings. By handing over documents personally, officials aim to ensure that all affected business owners clearly understand the instructions and timelines given.

Recent demolitions in Roysambu highlight the seriousness of the operation. Many traders there lost their stalls after the expiry of a previous notice. Some reported heavy financial setbacks following the overnight action. Similar removals have also taken place in nearby Githurai.

KeNHA says the reclaimed land will be used to improve transport infrastructure. The authority plans to construct designated bus bays along the highway. These facilities are intended to create safer pick-up and drop-off points for passengers.

Officials believe the project will help reduce congestion on the busy road. The Thika Superhighway carries high volumes of traffic daily. Unregulated structures along the roadside have contributed to safety concerns and blocked planned developments.

While some residents support the move, others say traders need more time to adjust. Many small businesses depend on roadside locations for customer access. The sudden removals have raised concerns about livelihoods.

KeNHA maintains that the road reserve is public land reserved for transport purposes. The agency insists that clearing the area is necessary for long-term development and improved safety.

Authorities have urged all traders operating on road reserves to comply with the issued notices. They warn that continued occupation of the land will lead to further action. The clean-up exercise is expected to continue in other affected sections of the highway.
