Kibuye Market chairwoman Judith Matengo, popularly known as Nyaramba, was arrested Monday night. A viral video showed her attacking two female traders with a wooden rod. The footage sparked outrage and condemnation across social media.

In the video, Matengo violently clashed with the women while bystanders looked on. The victims, Mercy Okoth and Rozette Adhiambo, sustained soft-tissue injuries and sought treatment at Lumumba Sub-County Hospital. They later recorded statements with police. Authorities said they are also pursuing other suspects linked to the attack.
Nyaramba was caught hiding within the market precincts soon after the incident. Police confirmed she will be arraigned on Tuesday, November 18. The motive behind the attack remains unclear.
Kisumu Central MP Joshua Oron condemned the assault. “If you must resort to beating traders just to secure support, then you have already lost the trust and confidence of the people. This kind of intimidation has no place in our community, and it must be condemned in the strongest terms possible. I call on all relevant authorities to take immediate action against the perpetrators,” he said.
Social media users also criticized Matengo, claiming she has a history of attacking traders. Observers said the incident highlights the need for stronger oversight and accountability for market leaders.
Authorities assured the public that the investigation continues and all involved will face justice. The case has reignited discussions on trader safety. As the arraignment approaches, residents are watching closely, demanding that such violence is swiftly addressed.
