“This Will Save Time and Reduce Errors”: Kenya Power Rolls Out OCR Technology to Transform Meter Reading

Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has introduced a new technology to improve meter reading. The system, called Optical Character Recognition (OCR), scans meters directly. It removes the need for manual typing. This ensures faster and more accurate readings.

“Technology drives our business, especially billing. With OCR, the meter reader just scans the meter. The system captures the reading automatically. This saves time and removes human errors,” said Richard Wida, KPLC’s Commercial Cycle Manager. The system was piloted in Nairobi for six months starting March 2025. It is now being rolled out across all eight regions.

The rollout targets 1.8 million postpaid meters. These meters previously needed manual readings every month. OCR will reduce mistakes and improve billing accuracy. It also speeds up data collection.

The technology is part of KPLC’s broader digital transformation. “OCR complements other innovations we have introduced. It strengthens operations and enhances customer service,” Wida added.

KPLC has also deployed self-service platforms. The MyPower app and USSD code *977# allow postpaid customers to submit their readings from their phones. In the future, OCR will be integrated into these platforms. Customers will scan meters themselves, reducing errors further.

Smart meters are another innovation. They are used for large power users, SMEs, and selected domestic clients. Smart meters allow two-way communication. This enables remote readings, disconnections, and reconnections. Combined with OCR, these meters improve efficiency and service delivery.

With OCR, Kenya Power is modernizing operations. Customers will enjoy faster, accurate readings. Billing errors will drop. Data collection will be more reliable. By combining automation, self-service platforms and smart meters, KPLC is improving service and reinforcing its commitment to innovation.
