The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has confirmed the death of three recruits at the Defence Forces Recruits Training School (DFRTS) in Eldoret. The recruits developed medical complications during a routine endurance exercise on Thursday, January 29. They were immediately attended to by the on-site medical team and transferred to Eldoret Regional Hospital. Sadly, all three were pronounced dead.

In a statement released Friday, January 30, KDF expressed deep sorrow. “The Kenya Defence Forces is deeply saddened to announce the tragic loss of three recruits during a scheduled training activity,” the statement said. “The recruits developed medical complications while participating in a routine endurance exercise.”
KDF said the recruits received urgent care before being moved to the hospital for specialized treatment. Unfortunately, all efforts to save them failed. Families were notified immediately. KDF also deployed support teams to assist relatives during this difficult time. “The next of kin have been formally notified, and the Kenya Defence Forces is providing the necessary support to the affected families. KDF conveys its deepest condolences to the families, loved ones, fellow recruits, and colleagues of the deceased,” the statement added.
A full investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the tragedy. KDF said the inquiry would follow established military procedures. Findings will guide future safety measures. “A thorough investigation has been initiated to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. The findings will inform any necessary measures to enhance the safety and welfare of personnel undergoing training,” KDF said.
KDF emphasized its commitment to safety, professionalism, and care for all personnel. Officials said lessons from the investigation would prevent similar incidents. The armed forces assured the public that recruit welfare remains a top priority, even during rigorous training.
This tragedy highlights the risks of military training. It has left families, colleagues, and the KDF community mourning. The young recruits, who had just started their service, will be remembered for their dedication to the nation.
