US President Donald Trump has escalated tensions with South Africa. He announced that the country will not be invited to the 2026 G20 summit in Miami. The move signals a sharp turn in US diplomacy toward Pretoria. It comes amid a series of controversial allegations by Trump’s administration. The decision has drawn global attention and sparked debate over US–South Africa relations.

Trump posted his statement on Truth Social. He accused South Africa of ignoring “horrific Human Rights Abuses” against white farmers. He also criticized Pretoria for refusing to hand over the G20 presidency after this year’s summit in Johannesburg. “South Africa has demonstrated to the world they are not a country worthy of membership anywhere,” he wrote. The US skipped the Johannesburg summit, citing conflicting priorities on trade and climate.
The dispute worsened when South African President Cyril Ramaphosa declined the traditional G20 handover. Trump’s officials also repeated claims of a “white genocide” targeting Afrikaners. “The South African government refuses to acknowledge or address the horrific Human Rights Abuses endured by Afrikaners,” Trump wrote. He added that farms were being taken from them. South Africa has consistently dismissed these accusations as false and misleading.
The tensions date back to May, when Trump confronted Ramaphosa at the White House with a video claiming to prove the allegations. South African officials called it inaccurate and inflammatory. Despite this, Trump has maintained his stance. He framed the Miami summit exclusion as a response to Pretoria’s perceived failures.
The 2026 G20 summit is scheduled for December at Trump National Doral Miami golf resort in Florida. South Africa’s exclusion has deepened the diplomatic rift. It raises concerns about global cooperation on trade, climate, and economic issues. Observers say the move signals a more confrontational US approach toward nations that challenge its policies.
