Trump Claims US Control Over Venezuela as Maduro Faces Narcotrafficking Charges, Sparks Global Tensions

President Donald Trump intensified his claim over Venezuela as deposed leader Nicolas Maduro was flown to New York to face narcotrafficking charges. Maduro, 63, and his wife were seized in a bold US operation on Saturday. The raid involved commandos, jet strikes, and a massive naval fleet off Venezuela’s coast.

Maduro’s successor, Delcy Rodriguez, surprised observers by offering to cooperate with the US. She invited Washington to work on a joint agenda. This came hours after Trump warned her she would face severe consequences if she resisted US demands.

Trump stressed the country’s strategic interests. “We need total access. We need access to the oil and other resources to rebuild their country,” he said. No US troops remain inside Venezuela, but a large naval force, including an aircraft carrier, is stationed offshore.

International reactions were swift and mixed. China, Russia, and Iran condemned the raid. They called it a violation of international law. Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro described it as an assault on Latin American sovereignty. Italy and Israel, however, supported the US action.

The United Nations Security Council will hold an emergency session at Venezuela’s request. The move aims to address international concerns. Inside Venezuela, opposition leaders said the US action is not enough. They demand political prisoners be freed and the 2024 election results recognized.

US lawmakers also reacted. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said Americans are “scratching their heads in wonderment and fear.” Secretary of State Marco Rubio clarified that Washington does not seek full regime change. He said the US plans to hold Maduro accountable while monitoring his remaining government officials.

The situation shows Venezuela’s high geopolitical stakes. Trump wants to secure resources and influence. Meanwhile, global scrutiny increases. Latin America and the world are watching closely as US actions reshape power dynamics in the oil-rich nation.
