Ugandan Student Jailed Over False Social Media Claims About President Museveni’s Health and Reputation

A Kampala court has jailed a 20-year-old student for spreading false information about President Yoweri Museveni and his son, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba. Edison Ssemugenyi, a Senior Six student, appeared before Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, December 9. He admitted posting misleading claims on social media.

Between August and November, Ssemugenyi falsely claimed that President Museveni was critically ill and bedridden. He also posted abusive remarks about Muhoozi. Prosecutors said the posts gained significant attention online. Authorities warned they could mislead the public and cause unnecessary alarm.

Ssemugenyi pleaded guilty and asked for leniency. Magistrate Esther Nyadoi acknowledged his youth and cooperation. “He was doing his final exams when arrested. I believe he can change,” she said. She added the offence involved misleading the public and disrespecting national leaders. While the law allows for a fine, she ruled it inappropriate because of the high-ranking positions involved. She stressed that online platforms should not be misused to spread falsehoods. He was sentenced to six months, running concurrently for the two counts.

Ssemugenyi faces another charge over a TikTok video alleging that President Museveni is a thief. Prosecutors say it aimed to degrade the president and incite hostility. He denied this allegation. The trial for that count will start on January 6, 2026.

The case highlights growing scrutiny over social media in Uganda. Courts are holding people accountable for misinformation. False claims can mislead citizens and harm the reputation or perceived health of national leaders.
