Former President Uhuru Kenyatta impressed attendees at the IGAD Conference in Nairobi on Wednesday, December 17. He made a special gesture for nominated Senator Crystal Asige, who is visually impaired. Before addressing the delegates, he paused to ensure she felt included. The moment was light-hearted but meaningful.

Uhuru described himself in detail for Senator Asige. “I am an African gentleman, 5’11 and shrinking, middle-aged on the plus side, slightly lighter chocolate, wearing a white shirt, slightly round, and only a little bit round,” he said. The audience laughed and smiled. His description allowed Asige and others with visual impairments to experience the event fully. It showed his awareness and thoughtfulness.
Senator Asige praised him on social media. She called him a “good sport” for taking the time to give a visual description. “I appreciate President Uhuru Kenyatta for seeing it as important to be inclusive of the VIPs in the room. He did well, right?” she wrote. The gesture was widely applauded.
Beyond the humorous moment, Uhuru delivered a strong message to the youth. He told them to act now and not wait for “tomorrow” to lead. “You are the leaders of today. Your ideas, courage, and commitment will shape Africa’s future,” he said.
The conference left a lasting impression. Uhuru’s self-description brought humor and warmth. It also promoted inclusivity and empathy for people with disabilities. Attendees and online audiences praised him for his thoughtfulness and inspiring leadership.
