“Unable to Stand”: CHADEMA Raises Alarm Over John Heche’s Health in Custody

Tanzania’s opposition party CHADEMA has raised urgent concern over the health of its Deputy National Chairperson, John Heche. Heche reportedly fell seriously ill while in police custody. The party said he has gone three days without food. He suffers severe chest pain, high fever, and extreme weakness. He is now unable to stand. His condition has sparked outrage among opposition supporters. It has also drawn attention to detainee welfare in Tanzania.

Heche was arrested on Wednesday, October 22, outside a Dodoma court. The court was hearing the treason trial of CHADEMA leader Tundu Lissu. Heche was detained at Mtumba Police Station. His arrest came days after he was blocked from traveling to Kenya to attend former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s funeral. The detention and neglect have intensified calls for immediate action.

In a statement on Thursday, October 30, CHADEMA said Heche’s health was deteriorating rapidly. “Today marks the third day that Honourable Heche has not eaten, and he is suffering from severe chest pain, body aches and a high fever, leaving him unable to stand,” the party said. CHADEMA demanded that authorities transfer him to a hospital immediately. They called for urgent medical care.

The party said his condition highlights deeper problems in Tanzania’s detention system. They stressed that police have a duty to protect detainees’ health. Party leaders warned that continued neglect could escalate political tensions.

Heche’s arrest has drawn widespread criticism. Supporters argue that neglecting medical needs violates human rights. It also raises concerns about fairness in handling political detainees.

CHADEMA insists Heche must receive immediate care. They say this case shows broader challenges in detention practices. The party called on authorities to act quickly. They want transparent and humane treatment for all prisoners, especially political figures.
