United Opposition Slams Nyeri Governor Kahiga Over Inflammatory Comments

The United Opposition of Kenya has strongly criticized Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, labeling his recent remarks as “classic hate speech” and demanding urgent action from both the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the Council of Governors (CoG).

In a statement released on Wednesday, October 22, the coalition’s spokesperson, Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi, made it clear that Kahiga’s comments were entirely personal and did not represent the views of any party within the United Opposition. “These statements are plainly hate speech, as outlined under Article 33 of the Constitution,” Dr. Kituyi said.

He urged President William Ruto, UDA Party Leader, alongside senior officials – including Chairperson Cecily Mbarire and Secretary General Senator Hassan Omar; to publicly reprimand the Nyeri Governor. “Governor Kahiga’s offensive remarks demand condemnation, starting with his party leadership,” he added, criticizing the lack of an official response.

The opposition also called on the Council of Governors to act swiftly, accusing Kahiga of making statements “intended to spark ethnic tensions.” They dismissed his earlier apology as “hastily prepared” and inadequate. “An apology alone is insufficient. The CoG must censure him in the public interest,” Dr. Kituyi emphasized.

Dr. Kituyi further suggested that Kahiga may have been influenced by unnamed political figures seeking to exploit divisions between communities. “Governor Kahiga should reveal who orchestrated these statements at such a sensitive time,” he said.

He warned that deliberately provoking conflict between Luo and Kikuyu communities could constitute a serious threat to national cohesion and may even be interpreted as an act against the state. “The people of Kenya deserve accountability from their leaders,” Dr. Kituyi added.

Governor Kahiga stepped down from his role as Vice-Chairman of the Council of Governors following the public backlash and had issued an apology for his comments. Despite this, the United Opposition insists further steps are necessary to prevent political and ethnic tensions from escalating.

All this underscores the fragility of national unity during periods of mourning and highlights the scrutiny public leaders face when making statements that touch on ethnic or political sensitivities.
