Waititu to Remain In Jail Pending Bond Ruling, Court Declares

Convicted ex-Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu is set to spend yet another month in prison after a ruling on his bond application was pushed to next month.

High Court Judge Lucy Njuguna on Wednesday ruled that Waititu will stay in custody until April 23 as the court determines the prospects of a new bond application. The judge also deferred the hearing of Waititu’s amended appeals as the teams prepare for the said hearing.

Earlier this month, the same Judge Lucy Njuguna denied a bail application by Waititu, saying that he did not convince the court that his appeal had high chances of success, therefore not meeting the conditions for bail.

Waititu was in February sentenced to 12 years imprisonment or a fine of 53 million shillings after he was found guilty of corruption. The embattled ex-governor was unable to raise the fine on the spot, and was taken to remand at the Nairobi Industrial Area Prison.

The governor has remained in prison ever since, with hopes of freedom dimming after his first bond application was dismissed two weeks ago.

Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa were present in today’s session as part of Waititu’s legal team and to also show solidarity with the former governor.
