“I’ve His Spirit”: Wajackoyah Declares Himself Raila Odinga’s Political Heir, Stirs Controversy

Roots Party leader George Wajackoyah has boldly claimed he is the political heir of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. His announcement comes months after Raila’s sudden death, which left a huge leadership gap, particularly in Nyanza where he enjoyed unwavering support.

Wajackoyah told Ramogi TV that Raila had spiritually passed his political mantle to him. He explained that while many of Raila’s supporters remained aligned with the Broad-Based Government alongside President William Ruto, the former premier had shifted his ideological focus before his death. “He left people physically in government, but spiritually, he left me his vision,” Wajackoyah said.

He also suggested that Raila’s loyalists will gradually migrate to the Roots Party. According to Wajackoyah, those committed to Raila’s principles will eventually recognize him as the true torchbearer. “Now that Baba’s spirit is here, the real followers will align with Roots,” he added.

In addition, Wajackoyah questioned claims by Migori businessman Oketch Salah, who said he was Raila’s adopted political heir. Wajackoyah dismissed the assertion, noting he had met Salah only once in Tanzania and denied any formal political endorsement.

Raila’s passing has sparked a scramble among politicians seeking to inherit his influence. For decades, he cultivated deep loyalty among his supporters, creating a network of voters who often treat his guidance as near-sacred. Many political players now aim to claim parts of that base, citing private conversations and supposed blessings from the former ODM leader.

Political analysts say Wajackoyah’s approach is unusual because it leans heavily on spiritual and ideological claims rather than formal party endorsement. Some argue this may resonate with certain segments of Raila’s supporters, while others view it as controversial.

Despite skepticism, Wajackoyah appears determined to consolidate support under the Roots Party. His claim has added a new layer to debates about Raila Odinga’s legacy and who is best positioned to continue his political vision.
