“We’re Confident the Firearm Will Be Recovered Soon”: Four Arrested in GSU Gun Theft Linked to Raila Odinga’s Funeral

Detectives have arrested four young men suspected of stealing a General Service Unit (GSU) officer’s gun during the funeral of the late Raila Odinga. The incident happened on October 19 at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) in Bondo, Siaya County.

The officer was providing security for Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa when his Jericho pistol went missing. Panic spread quickly among his colleagues, prompting a massive search. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) launched a week-long manhunt across Siaya and Kisumu counties.

Police tracked the suspects to Kisumu East after receiving key information from members of the public. Detectives moved swiftly and arrested the four men believed to be behind the theft. They were taken into custody for interrogation.

A senior DCI officer confirmed the arrests, saying, “We’re confident the firearm will be recovered soon.” He praised the public for helping officers trace the suspects. The suspects are now being held at Kisumu East Police Station as investigations continue.

Detectives believe the group may be linked to other criminal activities in the region. They are working to recover the missing firearm and identify possible accomplices. “We are following several leads and expect positive results soon,” the officer added.

Security officials have called the arrests a major breakthrough. They warned that anyone found tampering with police weapons will face the full force of the law. The incident has also raised questions about security lapses during high-profile public events.

Meanwhile, the GSU officer whose weapon was stolen is being questioned to determine how the gun disappeared under his watch. Police say strict disciplinary action will follow if negligence is confirmed.

The investigation is still ongoing, with detectives maintaining that recovering the firearm remains their top priority. The arrests mark a key step in solving one of the most daring thefts to hit Kenya’s security ranks this year.
