A 22-storey building under construction in Westlands partially collapsed late Wednesday, trapping four workers and leaving one dead. The incident happened around 8 pm along School Lane, near the Bank of Africa. Police confirmed that while two workers escaped unharmed, one was rescued with injuries and another tragically died.

Nairobi police commander Issa Mohamud said, “We do not know why they were working at night. Our teams are at the scene to know more, but one worker died unfortunately.” Investigators from the county government and the National Construction Authority have arrived to determine the cause of the collapse.
Emergency responders, including the Kenya Red Cross, worked through the night to rescue the trapped workers. The area has been secured to ensure safety while search and rescue operations continue. Officials have not yet confirmed the condition of the injured worker.
This is the latest in a worrying series of construction accidents across Kenya. Just a day earlier, a building under construction collapsed in Kericho County, leaving one person dead and several others injured. Days before that, a partially demolished building at Blue Estate in Shauri Moyo, Nairobi, trapped several people.
Experts warn that the rapid pace of construction in urban areas may be outstripping safety oversight. Concerns have been raised about adherence to building regulations and whether some contractors cut corners during construction. Calls for stricter enforcement and routine inspections are growing louder.
“These repeated collapses are unacceptable,” said one safety expert, emphasizing the need for stronger oversight. The public is also demanding accountability, especially as more workers lose their lives on construction sites.
For the families of the victims, the incidents bring grief and uncertainty. For the city, they highlight the urgent need to strengthen safety standards. Authorities have pledged thorough investigations to prevent further tragedies, but the message is clear: construction safety cannot be compromised.
As Nairobi continues to grow, balancing urban development with worker safety remains a critical challenge. The Westlands collapse is a stark reminder of the risks faced daily by construction workers in Kenya.
