Wet Mornings, Hot Afternoons: Kenya Meteorological Department Warns of Extreme Weather Swings Across Kenya

Kenyans should brace for a mix of rain, heat, and chilly mornings this week. The Kenya Meteorological Department has released a seven-day forecast covering April 7 to April 13. The outlook points to shifting weather patterns across multiple regions. Some areas will receive steady rainfall. Others will experience high temperatures above 30°C.

According to the forecast, rainfall will be widespread but uneven. Regions expected to receive rain include the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, parts of the Rift Valley, the Coast, and Northeastern Kenya. In many of these areas, mornings will start cloudy. Rain will then develop later in the day. Afternoon and night showers are likely in several counties.

The Lake Victoria Basin and western counties will experience frequent showers. Areas such as Kisumu, Kakamega, and Kisii are expected to see rain in the morning and thunderstorms later. In contrast, northwestern parts like Turkana will remain mostly sunny. However, brief showers may occur in isolated areas, especially at night.

In central Kenya, including Nairobi, conditions will be mixed. Mornings are likely to be cloudy with occasional light rain. Sunshine will break through during the day. Showers may return in the afternoon or evening. Residents are advised to plan for sudden weather changes.

Meanwhile, the Coast and southeastern lowlands will experience higher temperatures. Counties such as Mombasa, Kilifi, and Kwale are expected to record daytime temperatures above 30°C. Despite the heat, rain showers will still occur at different times of the day. This combination may create humid conditions.

The weatherman also noted colder nights in some regions. Parts of the central highlands and areas near Mt. Kilimanjaro may record temperatures below 10°C. “Rainfall is expected to continue in some parts… while daytime temperatures will exceed 30°C in several regions,” the department stated.

This forecast highlights a week of contrasts. From heavy rains to intense heat, Kenyans should stay alert. Weather conditions may change quickly.
