Meta-owned WhatsApp rolled out a new username feature on Wednesady, 8th April, 2026, allowing people to connect without revealing their phone numbers. The feature was initially tested with a small group of users on Android and iOS, with a wider release expected in the coming weeks.

The update will allow users to create unique usernames that could be shared instead of personal contact information. For years, phone numbers had been the main way to identify users, but this raised privacy concerns and made it harder for some users to manage who could contact them.
With usernames, users could search for and message others directly without exchanging phone numbers. The feature worked like other social platforms, giving people more freedom to connect safely and reducing unwanted messages from strangers. Early testers reported that it made networking and community engagement easier while protecting personal information.
The rollout was gradual, allowing WhatsApp to test the system and address any issues before broader availability. Analysts said this was one of the biggest updates to WhatsApp’s core identity system in years, bringing it closer to competitors that already allowed username-based communication.
Beyond privacy, the feature also improved discoverability. Users could create handles representing themselves professionally or personally, making it easier to connect with new contacts without giving away their number.
Meta confirmed that usernames would remain linked to verified accounts to ensure authenticity. Users could still control who messages them, maintaining safety while using the new system.
As the feature expands, it signals a shift in digital messaging toward privacy and user autonomy. For many, the ability to connect without sharing a phone number was a gamechanger, offering convenience and security in one update.
