Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has declared that he remains the most active opposition figure as Kenya approaches the 2027 general elections. Speaking on Kameme FM, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader dismissed claims that his remarks are weakening the opposition. Instead, he said his efforts have largely kept it visible.

Gachagua emphasized that his actions have kept the opposition in motion. “When I go silent, the opposition goes silent,” he said. He claimed no other opposition leader has held as many meetings as he has since the start of 2026. Even during his trip to the United States, he attended numerous gatherings, engaging voters and stakeholders across the opposition spectrum.
He questioned how some opposition leaders expect to remove President William Ruto while focusing on social media or hotel meetings. “You must go out to the voters. Where will you get votes if you remain in hotels or online?” he asked. He stressed that active grassroots engagement is critical to any political success.
Gachagua also addressed Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, cautioning him against abandoning the Mt Kenya voting bloc to court the Nyanza region. He said it would be a strategic mistake to leave a strong voting base of around six million people for the smaller Nyanza votes. “I don’t think Kalonzo will be foolish enough to leave millions of votes for just a fraction. ODM is already fractured,” he added.
The former deputy president further suggested that even President Ruto may struggle to win a significant share of votes in the Luo Nyanza region due to internal conflicts within the ODM party. He implied that maintaining strong regional support is vital, and shifting focus prematurely could weaken opposition efforts ahead of the next election.
Gachagua’s comments highlight the growing political maneuvering as parties gear up for 2027. He appears determined to assert his influence, positioning himself as both a key opposition figure and a central player in shaping the electoral landscape.
