Worst Fire in Years: Tai Po Estate Blaze Hits Hong Kong, Leaving Over 60 Dead and Thousands Homeless

Hong Kong is mourning after a huge fire swept through a housing estate in Tai Po. The blaze killed more than 60 people and left thousands without homes. The tragedy has raised serious questions about safety, construction practices, and accountability. The fire erupted during renovation work at Wang Fuk Court, a large estate with nearly 4,800 residents.

The flames started on bamboo scaffolding around one of the towers. Strong winds pushed the fire to nearby blocks. Flammable construction materials made the situation worse. Thick smoke-filled corridors within minutes. Many residents struggled to escape. Firefighters arrived quickly, but several towers were already burning. Officials later confirmed over 60 deaths, including a firefighter who died during rescue efforts. At least 279 people are still missing. Many others are injured.

Rescue operations were massive. More than 700 firefighters were deployed. Over 200 fire engines and about 100 ambulances supported the mission. The fire was classified as a Level 5 alarm, the highest in Hong Kong. Crews battled intense heat and collapsing sections. Families waited outside through the night, desperate for information. Temporary shelters opened for displaced residents who escaped with almost nothing.

Investigations began immediately. Police arrested two directors of the renovation company and an engineering consultant. They face manslaughter charges. Early reports point to unsafe materials and weak safety controls. Local leaders have promised a full investigation. They also ordered checks on other estates under renovation.

The city now faces a painful recovery. Families are grieving. Survivors are trying to rebuild their lives. Authorities are under pressure to explain what went wrong. The Tai Po blaze has shaken the entire region. Hong Kong is demanding answers, reforms and stronger safety measures to prevent another disaster of this scale.
