Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital has taken a bold step in the fight against antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The facility has launched Empiric Antibiotic Guidelines, a first-of-its-kind framework to guide doctors in responsible antibiotic use. The goal is to improve patient safety and strengthen healthcare standards across Nairobi County.

Speaking during the launch at Safari Park Hotel, CEO Fredrick Obanda said the new guidelines mark a major milestone in public healthcare. “The inspiration came from our commitment to patient safety, evidence-based practice and responsible antibiotic use,” he said.
Obanda noted that as a busy Level 5 referral hospital, Mama Lucy handles many infections daily. The new system ensures early and effective treatment while reducing misuse of antibiotics. “This was a joint effort by our doctors, pharmacists and microbiologists. We’re grateful to the Nairobi City County Government and partners who made this possible,” he added.
He said the move supports the county’s mission of delivering safe, quality, and dignified healthcare to every Nairobian. “Our work supports the County’s vision to ensure every Nairobian receives care guided by science, not trial and error,” Obanda explained.
The hospital plans to roll out regular training and audits to ensure compliance. It is also improving its research systems to monitor antibiotic use and resistance trends.
Obanda emphasized that the hospital is committed to leading change in infection control. “We are proud to be at the forefront of Nairobi’s push toward evidence-driven, patient-centered care,” he said. “When we say Afya Yako, Fahari Yetu, your health, our pride – it’s not just a slogan. It’s our promise.”
The launch sets a new benchmark for Kenya’s public hospitals, marking Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital as a leader in modern, science-based healthcare.
