Your Phone Number Is No Longer Public: M-Pesa’s Quiet Privacy Revolution

A small change is about to reshape how millions of Kenyans send money daily. Safaricom has introduced a new privacy feature on M-Pesa that hides part of users’ phone numbers during transactions. It may look minor. It is not.

From March 24, recipients will no longer see a sender’s full phone number. Instead, part of it will be masked. For example, a number like 0705123734 will now appear as 0705***734. Names will still be visible. Transaction details remain the same. But that one change adds a layer of protection many users did not have before.

Safaricom says the move is about safety. “Only essential sender details will be visible to the recipient,” the company stated. It added that the update will “help protect your personal information, reduce misuse, and support safer transactions.” The feature also aligns with Kenya’s growing focus on data protection and digital privacy.

The impact is massive. M-Pesa handles millions of transactions every day. Billions of shillings move across the platform in hours. With such scale, even small vulnerabilities can be exploited. Fraud, identity exposure, and misuse of personal data have been ongoing concerns. Masking phone numbers directly addresses that risk.

The update does not remove transparency completely. Users who need full details can still request them. By forwarding a transaction message to 334, the sender is prompted to approve sharing their full information. If they agree, the details are released. If not, the request is declined. Each request lasts 24 hours.

The feature has also been extended to merchant payments. Small businesses using Paybill and Buy Goods services will now benefit from the same protection. This ensures consistency across the ecosystem.

This is more than a technical tweak. It reflects a shift in how digital money works. Privacy is no longer optional. It is expected. And with this move, Safaricom is quietly setting a new standard for mobile transactions in Kenya.
