Uganda marked a powerful military moment this week as President Yoweri Museveni honoured his son, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, with the country’s second-highest military decoration. The award placed Muhoozi at the centre of national attention. It also underlined his rising status inside the armed forces.

The Kabalega Star was presented during the 45th Tarehe Sita celebrations in Kabale District. The day remembers the 1981 launch of the National Resistance Army war. It remains one of Uganda’s most important military dates. This year, however, the focus shifted to the future.
Muhoozi, who serves as Chief of Defence Forces, received the medal for his leadership of Uganda’s Special Forces. Under his command, the elite unit went through major changes. Training became stricter. Discipline improved. Operational readiness increased. As a result, the force became more professional and effective.
UPDF officials said Muhoozi oversaw key missions in Somalia, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. These operations targeted extremist groups and protected critical facilities. They also helped to stabilise regions that affect Uganda’s security.
During the ceremony, Museveni praised the army for its strength. He said the UPDF had become more organised and better equipped. He also thanked the troops for keeping the country safe during the recent elections.
Muhoozi spoke after receiving the medal. He thanked the soldiers for their service. He also pledged to continue building a disciplined and modern force. He said security remains the foundation of national development.
The Kabalega Star is named after Omukama Kabalega of Bunyoro. He resisted British colonial rule. The medal is awarded for exceptional courage. It ranks just below the Order of Katonga. Only a few officers have received it.
By awarding Muhoozi this honour, Museveni placed him among Uganda’s top military figures. The move strengthened his standing in the army. It also raised his profile across the country.
Many Ugandans already see Muhoozi as a powerful figure. Some view him as a possible future leader. This medal added weight to that perception.
The Kabale ceremony also included other awards. Senior officers were recognised for their service. Veterans of the liberation struggle were also honoured.
