Tehran Celebrates as Two-Week Ceasefire Brings Temporary Peace with the US

Tehran erupted in celebrations on Wednesday following the announcement of a two-week ceasefire between Iran and the United States. Crowds gathered in Enqelab-e-Eslami Square, waving Iranian flags and holding posters of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, chanting slogans to mark the temporary pause in hostilities.

The ceasefire allows for safe passage through the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil shipments. Iran’s foreign minister confirmed that the armed forces will coordinate marine traffic during the two-week period. The agreement follows intense negotiations mediated by Pakistan, whose Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif urged US President Donald Trump to extend the negotiation deadline and called on Iran to restore access to the strait.

Iranian officials are hailing the ceasefire as a “victory,” highlighting national unity, patience, and military resilience as key factors that led to securing US agreement. They claim that Tehran’s preconditions for negotiations were met and stress that the country’s leadership successfully resisted external pressures. According to them, “Our unity and patience have ensured our voice was respected in negotiations,” signaling confidence in Iran’s position.

In contrast, President Trump described the deal as a “total and complete victory. 100 percent. No question about it,” in a phone interview with AFP. He added that Iran’s uranium stockpiles would be “perfectly taken care of” under the terms of the agreement. Trump also acknowledged China’s role in facilitating the dialogue between the two nations.

The ceasefire sets the stage for formal talks scheduled to begin on Friday in Pakistan. Analysts note that while the agreement temporarily halts military activity, long-term resolution will depend on further negotiations, regional diplomacy, and mutual concessions.

While the streets of Tehran celebrated, questions remain over the stability of the peace and the broader implications for the region. Observers say the ceasefire is a pause rather than a permanent solution, but for now, it offers a rare moment of calm after weeks of tension.
