From Mumias to the WNBA Spotlight: Madina Okot’s Rise Redraws Kenya’s Basketball Future

Kenya’s sporting history has taken a major leap after Madina Okot was drafted 13th overall in the 2026 WNBA Draft by the Atlanta Dream. The selection makes her the first Kenyan ever picked in the opening round of the league’s annual draft. It is a breakthrough moment for Kenyan and African basketball on the global stage.

Okot’s journey is as unlikely as it is inspiring. Born in Mumias, she originally played volleyball before switching to basketball just six years ago. Her rapid rise saw her move from local Kenyan competitions to the United States college system, including spells at Mississippi State and later the University of South Carolina. In her final college season, she dominated the paint with double-doubles and strong rebounding numbers.

Her performance made her one of the most exciting frontcourt prospects in the draft. She averaged 12.8 points and 10.6 rebounds per game, while shooting efficiently from the field. Despite being denied an extra year of eligibility by the NCAA, she declared early and still secured a first-round selection, proving how fast her stock had risen.

After being drafted, Okot described the moment as surreal. “Sometimes I wake up and I’m like, ‘Am I really here?’” she said. She added, “Six years ago, I didn’t see myself being here today.” Her words reflect a journey marked by speed, sacrifice, and belief in a dream that once felt out of reach.

The Atlanta Dream see her as a long-term investment. Team officials highlighted her size, rebounding ability, and improving offensive game as key strengths. She now joins a competitive roster and enters a league where she will face the world’s best players from day one.

For Kenya, her success signals a new era. It shows that talent from local courts can reach the highest level of women’s basketball. Madina Okot is no longer just a promising athlete. She is now a symbol of what is possible.
