The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a fresh warning over changing weather patterns expected across the country in the next seven days. Several counties, especially in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, are set to receive enhanced rainfall. Areas including Nairobi, Kiambu, Nyeri, Murang’a, Embu and Meru are among those likely to be most affected.

The agency says rainfall will not be evenly spread. Some regions will experience repeated showers, especially in the afternoons. “Rainfall is expected over several parts of the country, with enhanced intensity,” Kenya Met stated. This raises concerns for transport and daily movement, particularly in urban areas where even moderate rain can slow down traffic and flood low-lying roads.
At the same time, attention has been drawn to the River Tana basin. The river, which passes through several counties, is expected to receive moderate rainfall. However, officials have eased fears of flooding. Water levels at Garissa are projected to remain within safe limits, with authorities confirming that “there is no risk of flooding within the forecast period.”
The weather picture across Kenya is highly contrasting. Coastal counties like Mombasa, Lamu, and Kilifi will remain hot, with temperatures rising above 30°C during the day. Inland regions in the central highlands will experience much colder nights, with some areas expected to drop below 10°C. This sharp contrast is likely to affect clothing choices, farming activities, and even health conditions.
Elsewhere, northern and eastern counties including Marsabit, Turkana, Wajir, and Garissa will experience strong winds and dry heat. Gusts in some areas may exceed 25 knots, making conditions more challenging. Along the coast, seas will remain relatively calm but slightly choppy in the afternoons. Overall, the week ahead brings a mix of rain, heat, wind and cold nights across different regions.
