Trump Extends Iran Ceasefire as Tensions Linger Over Blockade and Uncertain Peace Talks

Donald Trump has extended the ceasefire between the United States and Iran, buying more time for fragile peace talks while maintaining pressure through a continued naval blockade. The decision came just hours before the initial truce was expected to expire, highlighting the delicate balance between diplomacy and confrontation.

Trump said the extension followed a request from Pakistan, which is mediating the talks. He emphasized that the pause in hostilities would remain in place until Iran presents a clear proposal. “I have directed our Military to continue the Blockade and… extend the Ceasefire until such time as their proposal is submitted,” he stated.

Despite the extension, tensions remain high. The US has kept restrictions on Iranian ports and trade routes, a move strongly opposed by Tehran. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi criticised the blockade, saying, “blockading Iranian ports is an act of war,” and insisted the country will not negotiate under pressure.

The Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil route, has become a central issue in the standoff. Trump accused Iran of using the waterway for financial gain, claiming it generates massive daily revenue. He warned that reopening it without a deal would weaken US leverage.

Meanwhile, uncertainty clouds the future of the talks. Planned meetings in Islamabad remain unconfirmed, with both sides sending mixed signals. Iran has yet to officially respond to the ceasefire extension, raising questions about its willingness to return to negotiations.

Regional tensions are also spilling over into neighbouring countries. Clashes linked to the wider conflict continue, adding pressure on diplomatic efforts. Global leaders and institutions have urged restraint, warning that any escalation could disrupt energy markets and international trade.

Pakistan’s leadership welcomed the extension, calling it a chance for dialogue. However, analysts say the situation is now less about military strength and more about endurance and negotiation strategy.

For now, the ceasefire holds. But with both sides maintaining firm positions, the path to a lasting agreement remains uncertain.
