President William Ruto has urged Kenyans living abroad to be cautious about relying on social media for news from home. He warned that misinformation and manipulated content are shaping negative perceptions about the country.

Speaking in Rome, Italy, during an engagement with Kenyans in the diaspora, William Ruto said much of what circulates online is deliberately distorted for political and selfish interests. He advised citizens to verify information before believing it.
“If you go to social media today, you’ll think there is nothing good happening in Kenya. I ask you not to rely on social media for news about home,” Ruto said, cautioning against unchecked online narratives.
The President defended his administration’s record, saying the government is focused on long-term transformation rather than political distractions. He insisted that Kenya’s economic direction remains steady despite criticism from opponents.
“My focus is not about the next General Election. I am focused on transforming Kenya,” he added, stressing that difficult decisions are necessary for national progress.
Ruto also highlighted economic stability, claiming Kenya avoided defaulting on debt when several African countries were affected. He credited fiscal discipline for protecting the economy during global financial pressure.
On health, he pointed to the expansion of the Social Health Authority (SHA), saying millions of Kenyans have registered under the new system compared to the previous insurance scheme. He argued that the reforms are making healthcare more accessible and affordable.
The President also cited gains in housing and agriculture, including large-scale housing projects and increased maize production. He said reforms in farming have improved farmer incomes and reduced dependency on food imports.
Beyond domestic reforms, Ruto emphasized the importance of the diaspora. He said over 540,000 Kenyans have secured jobs abroad due to government agreements and recruitment reforms targeting rogue agencies.
He added that diaspora remittances remain a key source of foreign exchange, growing significantly in recent years. He encouraged Kenyans abroad to remain good ambassadors and invest back home.
Government officials, including Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, supported the President’s message, noting ongoing efforts to strengthen engagement with the diaspora community.
