U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that his government could send troops or launch airstrikes in Nigeria to stop the ongoing killing of Christians. Speaking aboard Air Force One while returning from Florida, Trump said the United States would not sit back as violence against Christian communities continues to rise. His comments have sparked global attention and raised questions about possible U.S. military involvement in West Africa.

Trump said the level of killings in Nigeria had reached alarming levels. “They’re killing record numbers of Christians in Nigeria,” he declared. “We’re not going to allow that to happen.” His words reflected deep frustration with the Nigerian government’s slow response to growing religious attacks.
The warning came just a day after Washington placed Nigeria back on its “Countries of Particular Concern” list. The designation targets nations accused of violating religious freedoms. Other countries on the list include China, North Korea, Myanmar, Russia and Pakistan. The move signals that the U.S. could consider sanctions, diplomatic pressure or direct intervention if Nigeria fails to act.
Trump hinted that several options were on the table. Asked whether this could mean airstrikes or ground troops, he said, “Could be. I envisage a lot of things.” The comment suggested that his administration was open to various forms of action to end the bloodshed.
The president’s statement follows years of reports about extremists and armed groups targeting Christian villages in Nigeria’s north and central regions. Thousands have died, and many families have been forced to flee their homes. Despite repeated promises, Nigeria’s security forces have struggled to contain the violence.
Trump’s tough tone mirrors his broader foreign policy approach, which often links American action to moral and humanitarian causes. While Nigeria’s government has not officially responded, analysts believe his words could strain diplomatic ties and increase pressure on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to act.
As concern grows, Trump’s threat marks a defining moment in U.S.-Nigeria relations. Whether it leads to real military involvement or remains a warning, it underscores America’s renewed focus on defending religious freedom and protecting vulnerable communities worldwide.
