Eleven Pupils of Makini school were stranded in a half submerged school bus for more than 8 hours on Tuesday night near the South C mosque following the heavy downpour in and around the city . The school bus with pupils on board had stalled, half submerged and was almost swept away by the flood waters which also hampered the rescue operations by emergency workers.
Abbass Gullet the Kenya red cross secretary general , his team and the Nairobi fire department had been called to help rescue the children but found it difficult to get to the bus because of the raging flooded waters.
“We are aware of the situation and a team has been sent there but they are also stuck on the way. We are trying to find alternatives,” he said while speaking to the press.
After being stuck there for over 8 hours at the Muhoho avenue section, the children were finally rescued from the bus at 3 am by a good Samaritan using a pick up truck. Immediately after their rescue the blessed Samaritan went back to assist several other motorists who were stuck in the floods.
In a tweet a few minutes after the rescue Kenya red cross society adviced Kenyans to be careful on the roads the choose to pass. It stated:
“We urge motorists to be careful especially on roads with mud and silt following the aftermath of the Nairobi floods.”
The pounding rains that have hit the city have brought with it a trail of destruction as more and more roads flood up.This makes the journey home from school or work more and more hazardous with news of people getting home as late as 4 am or being stuck in traffic jams as well as on the flooded roads becoming the norm for the last several days.
