The death of gospel singer Betty Bayo has taken a new turn after the Director of Public Prosecutions ordered fresh investigations into the circumstances surrounding her passing. The directive follows concerns raised by her family, who say many questions remain unanswered. Prosecutors now want clarity on how the popular singer died.

In a letter sent to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations on Tuesday, the DPP instructed officers to begin investigations immediately. Detectives have been given seven days to complete their work and forward their findings for review. The move signals official concern over the events leading to Bayo’s death.
The decision comes after Bayo’s mother, Joyce Wairimu, wrote to the DPP on December 9 requesting an inquest. In her letter, she said the family was troubled by the manner in which her daughter died. She questioned the medical explanation given and called for an independent investigation.
Betty Bayo, whose real name was Beatrice Wairimu Mbugua, died on November 10, 2025, at Kenyatta National Hospital. At the time, a family spokesperson, accompanied by her husband Hiram Gitau, said she had succumbed to leukaemia. They stated that she had been receiving treatment at the hospital before her death.
However, her mother disputes that account. She told prosecutors that Bayo had not shown signs of illness. She described her daughter as healthy and active. She claimed the death was sudden and suspicious. She also alleged that an “evil hand” could have been involved.
Wairimu further claimed the family was denied access to an autopsy report. She said the burial was hurried, raising fears that key facts were being hidden. She also alleged that doctors failed to provide clear medical records or explain what Bayo was being treated for.
Investigators are now expected to review hospital records and speak to those involved. They will also establish the true cause of death. The family hopes the probe will bring answers. Fans continue to mourn. Authorities say the process will be thorough and transparent.
