“Airbnb is banning the use of indoor security cameras in listings globally as part of efforts to simplify our policy on security cameras and other devices and to continue to prioritize the privacy of our community,” stated Juniper Downs, Airbnb’s Head of Community Policy and Partnerships.
Previously, Airbnb permitted indoor security cameras in common areas as long as they were disclosed, visible, and not in spaces like bedrooms or bathrooms. However, the updated policy prohibits indoor security cameras entirely, regardless of disclosure or location.
Downs explained, “Our goal was to create new, clear rules that provide our community with greater clarity about what to expect on Airbnb. These changes were made in consultation with our guests, Hosts, and privacy experts, and we’ll continue to seek feedback to help ensure our policies work for our global community.”
The majority of Airbnb listings do not have security cameras, so this update is expected to affect only a small subset. Additionally, the revised policy includes stricter guidelines for outdoor security cameras and other devices, such as noise decibel monitors.
While devices like doorbell cameras and noise decibel monitors remain permitted, Hosts must disclose their presence and location before guests book. These devices are prohibited from monitoring indoor spaces and certain outdoor areas where privacy is expected. Noise decibel monitors, which only assess noise levels and do not record or transmit sounds, are allowed only in common areas and must be disclosed.
