Kenyatta National Hospital has moved to reassure patients that services remain normal despite growing tension over a possible nurses’ strike. The country’s largest referral facility says it is working to resolve concerns raised by staff while keeping operations stable.

The warning of industrial action comes from the Kenya National Union of Nurses, which has cited delayed remittances and poor working conditions. The union argues that the issue has affected many nurses for years. Some are reportedly unable to access their full salaries due to unremitted deductions.
Hospital management, however, maintains that salaries are not the problem. “Staff salaries have been processed and paid up to March 2026,” KNH said in a statement. The hospital explained that the dispute mainly involves delays in statutory and third-party payments, which are influenced by funding cycles.
Union Secretary General Seth Panyako has expressed frustration over the situation. He said some nurses have remained on casual contracts for up to six years. “Enough is enough,” he stated, warning that staff are ready to take action if their concerns are not addressed.
The dispute also raises questions about fairness within the system. Nurses claim that newly hired staff sometimes earn more than long-serving employees. This has added to dissatisfaction and lowered morale among workers.
KNH has acknowledged the challenges and says it is engaging government agencies and union representatives to find a solution. The hospital noted that much of its funding depends on national health financing systems, which can affect the timing of payments.
Despite the uncertainty, KNH insists patient care will not be affected. Management says discussions are ongoing and remains confident that a resolution will be reached through dialogue.
For now, services continue as usual. But with tensions still high, many are watching closely. The outcome could have lasting implications for both healthcare workers and patients across the country.
