A viral moment that started as comedy has now revealed a painful reality. The phrase “Kwa Mbae,” made famous by a young boy giving directions to a boda boda rider, has captured millions online. But behind the humour is a family facing deep financial struggle in Tharaka Nithi.

The boy, identified as Musa Kihara, became an internet sensation after confidently guiding a rider through local landmarks. His innocent explanation of “when you reach Kwa Mbae” sparked jokes, memes, and TikTok trends across Kenya. But what many did not know is that his family is currently going through a difficult time.
The situation at home is heartbreaking. Musa comes from a family of six siblings, and one of his older siblings is battling cancer at Chogoria Hospital. The treatment costs have now climbed close to KSh 2 million, placing heavy pressure on the family. The mother says the father has been forced to stay at the hospital full-time to care for the sick child, leaving the household without a stable income.
She explained their daily struggles, saying at times they go without food. “We slept hungry last night,” she revealed, highlighting how severe the situation has become. The family also lives in poor housing conditions, making survival even harder as medical bills continue to rise.
Now, the mother is appealing to Kenyans for help. She is asking well-wishers to support hospital bills and also help her start a small business to sustain the family. Support contacts have been shared widely as the story spreads beyond social media fame.
What began as a funny phrase has now become a call for help. The same “Kwa Mbae” that made people laugh is now reminding Kenyans that behind viral moments, real lives often need urgent support.
