Motorists travelling along the Mai Mahiu–Suswa–Narok road are facing major disruptions after heavy rains triggered flooding and silt buildup along key sections of the highway. The situation has made parts of the route near Suswa difficult and, in some areas, completely impassable.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) raised the alarm, pointing to Kedong Ranch as the most affected area. Floodwaters swept across the road, leaving behind thick layers of mud and debris. This has slowed traffic and increased the risk for drivers using the route.
Emergency response teams have already been deployed to the ground. Their task is to clear the silt and restore normal traffic flow. However, ongoing rainfall continues to complicate the operation, making conditions unpredictable and dangerous.
Authorities are warning drivers not to take chances. Attempting to drive through flooded sections could lead to serious consequences. Vehicles risk being swept away or getting stuck in deep mud. “Motorists are advised to avoid driving through flooded areas and to strictly follow instructions from police officers and traffic marshals to prevent being swept away or getting stuck in silt deposits,” KeNHA said.
The stretch between the Naivasha Inland Container Depot and Suswa Ranch has been flagged as particularly risky. Water levels remain high, and the road surface is unstable. Motorists using this section are urged to exercise extreme caution.
For those planning to travel, KeNHA is advising a shift in route. The Narok–Njoro–Nakuru road has been identified as a safer alternative. Other options through Ngong and Naivasha are also available to help motorists avoid delays and dangerous conditions.
The disruption is significant. The Mai Mahiu–Suswa corridor is a key transport link connecting Nairobi to the Rift Valley and western Kenya. Any blockage along this route affects both passenger travel and the movement of goods.
KeNHA Director General Luka Kimeli assured road users that efforts are ongoing to resolve the situation. “The Authority is working around the clock to reopen the affected sections and ensure the safety of all motorists,” he said.
With heavy rains continuing across the country, motorists are being urged to stay alert and prioritise safety.
